I took my son to PCH following injury while surfing (surfboard hit him in the head and the surfboard fins cut his lower lid and scratched the cornea of his eye). He arrived still in bathers and a wet damp towel. He had a swollen eye, headache and was dizzy and nauseas and signs of concussion.
While the ED was relatively busy and it was a long wait, staff were prompt in providing pain relief and when his symptoms changed (he became tired and a bit out of it) he was assessed quickly. The main Dr, Deidre (Dr with Irish accent) was thorough and explained all of the procedures and assessments to both myself and my child in plain English. She was caring, reassuring and expressed empathy towards him during some uncomfortable procedures (when his eye needed close examination and sweeping his eye surface and inner eyelids out with a cotton bud to remove any sand).
Likewise, the nurse Julia (hot pink glasses, black hair) was kind, attentive and gentle when his eye was irrigated and also performed non clinical tasks which are not necessarily a nurses job but helped keep my son comfortable (eg. rolling up towels to rest his head on, getting blankets for him).
