"Paediatric care"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Paediatric Service

(as a parent/guardian),

Recently I took my child to ED Kalgoorlie with facial swelling from a tooth infection. We were seen by a doctor in ED, who I found was very dismissive and rude. we were told to seek help from the hospital if swelling got worse from the dentist my child seen and told they may need I.V Antibiotics for further treatment. this doctor looked at my child asked them to look up look down. proceeded to tell me they will be fine with just oral antibiotics. with this response I questioned the doctor. I felt they were displeased I questioned them. They then sent us to a pediatrician , Im glad we did because I believe we Received the care we needed from the doctor above. thank you for that Dr Ankur. in my opinion, the first doctor did not have bedside manners and treated us so horribly.

Dear octansdj94,

Thank you for telling us about your recent experience. It is so important for us to hear about our services from the perspective of our patients and their carers, both the good and the bad parts.

I am very sorry that you found the first doctor to be rude and dismissive. Over the last few months, we have placed a lot of emphasis on teaching our staff to be patient-centered; that is explaining to patients (and their carers) the reason behind care pathways being taken and actively including them in the decision-making process. Sharing stories like yours really helps with this process.

As a fellow parent, I know how important it is to advocate on behalf of our children and raise any concerns you have. As a health service manager, I am pleased your concerns were listened to and a member of our paeds team was called to come and see your child. I will certainly be pleased to pass your compliments on to Dr Ankur!

It is always a good chance for me to raise awareness of the Aishwarya’s CARE Call program too. We always ask people to do exactly as you have done, that is, raise their concerns with their treating doctor or ask to speak with another senior clinician. However, if this had not been the case, patients and families can make an Aishwarya’s CARE Call by calling 9080 5781 or using the fixed phone in the ED waiting room. This will ensure you are put through to a senior member of staff who will listen to your concerns and help you or your loved one with accessing the care needed.

Kindest regards
