My parent was admitted to Kalgoorlie regional hospital recently. On their discharge three days later, my parent was placed in a wheelchair and wheeled out to catch a taxi home. Somehow they have knocked their lower right leg on the wheelchair footrest. The nurse has bandaged my parent's leg and put them in the taxi and sent them home.

On arrival at home, their partner has had a look at the wound and has taken them to trinity medical centre where my parent has had the wound stitched. I believe to be about 9 stitches. My parent is a diabetic and has trouble with fluid retention in the legs.

Feeling quite letdown with the situation.

My parent now requires to visit the doctor everyday for the next few days.

You have every right to feel let down, I am very sorry this has occurred. Whilst I recognise that even if all care is taken by our staff accidents may still happen, but it is essential that if something like this occurs the correct steps are taken. These include ensuring an assessment is completed and the right clinical care is provided at the time of the incident. Also open disclosure with the patient and if appropriate their family should have occurred. It also includes reporting the incident through our clinical incident reporting system to investigate and follow up. I have reviewed the system and identified that a report matching this incident has been made. I will ensure the staff investigating this process are also aware of your post and the distress this incident has caused.
