"Baby having an X-ray"

About: Sale Hospital / Medical Imaging

(as a parent/guardian),

I took my baby (under 12 months old) to have an X-ray, all was going well and baby was happy, the staff were gentle with them etc.

I was asked to go behind the screen while the X-ray was being taken which is safety protocol. Baby was being held in position by a staff member - baby was happy. But then the staff member walked away! Baby rolled off the bed - I luckily was only a meter away and was watching, dived to the floor and caught baby.

No harm was done to baby and the staff member was mortified and apologetic- I was in shock and a little traumatised but baby was fine and happy again a minute later.

They finished the X-ray and I left. Cannot believe it happened and it could have been quite bad if baby had have hit the hard floor after falling a meter or so.

Dear turkeysj85,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your story with us in relation to your experience in our Medical Imaging department. We appreciate and understand the concerns you have raised regarding your baby.

The incident was logged in our incident management system and reviewed by the Practice Manager of the department, and our Quality team. Feedback was also sought from the two radiographers who were present during the incident.

The radiographer who held your baby thought that they had remained within a meter of the table throughout the procedure, but acknowledged that they did not have direct contact with your baby at all times. When they turned towards the radiographer who was taking the exposure, the baby rolled towards the edge of the table. You were returning to the table, and you and the radiographer caught your baby together. You were then invited to remain by the table for the duration of the x-ray, wearing a lead gown.

Both radiologists offer their sincere apologies that this occurred, and acknowledge how procedures involving infants can turn quickly. They both indicated that they have learned from what occurred and will ensure that your experience is not repeated, by ensuring that they remain in physical contact with any baby being x-rayed.

Again, we are very appreciative of the opportunity provided by your feedback to review our processes and learn from your experience.

Kind Regards,

Mark Dykgraaf

Chief Executive Officer
