I had to have a c section to deliver my second baby. The operation went well and I commend the team. However I believe my post surgery care in the hospital was sub par.
I stayed in Busselton hospital for 2 nights and asked to leave after the second.
On the first night after my surgery one of the midwives hooked my bladder bag onto the bed frame - higher than my body. I was on a drip over night and drank a full bottle of water. The next morning I awoke early and said my bladder feels very full, I buzzed a nurse to come in and check and once corrected over a litre of fluid came out. This is absolutely terrible and left me in a lot of pain for up to a week. No one apologised and I don't think the nurse wasn’t even informed of their mistake. I believe this could have caused irreparable damage. I was pretty devastated with being treated with such apparent lack of care and procedure.
On the next night I was offered more pain medication, I told the midwife I didn’t require more but they offered twice more and told me I would need some to get a good sleep, so I agreed. They didn’t tell me what they were giving me not told me of potential side effects.
An hour later I felt dizzy, sick, drunk and emotional. I couldn’t get up to get my 2 day old baby and didn’t feel safe or able to care for my baby for approximately 2 hours. My baby cried in their bassinet while I lay on the bed unable to lift my head for the nausea and drunk and hungover feeling. I buzzed the only midwife on the ward and while I lay there crying, they I felt, condescending told me they had to give another patient antibiotics and didn’t have time to help me. It was one of the worst 2 hours of my life.
I was alone and unable to care for my newborn baby in the few hours of their life. It turns out the nurse had given me an opioid, there is no way on earth I would have ever agreed to have taken this if I was informed of what it was and how it could have potentially affected me. I had morphine for my first babies birth and hated the experience and would never have willingly taken it ever again.
My spouse had been asked to go home to follow covid policies. I checked myself out the very next morning where I could go home to a loving spouse and very helpful parent.
I was so disappointed with my post care treatment at Busselton hospital and I hope all the midwife’s will read my review.
