I was admitted to the Stroke Unit at Canberra Hospital after suffering a TIA which led to temporary blindness in one eye. The nurses I saw in the unit with one exception were excellent. The doctors I encountered, with one exception, were terrible in my opinion.
I believe that Dr Ben who attends the stroke unit is a star. I found he was kind, compassionate and empathetic. I believe he goes the extra yards to ensure his patients understand what is going on in their care.
I found the other doctors I saw lacked any empathy or compassion for people who had undergone a terrifiying experience. They seemingly resented being questioned and appeared to spend the minimum time possible explaining treatment options, test results and the diagnosis.
In my opinion, the worse was incapable of communicating clearly. I was terrified and I believe they knew. Yet they seemingly did nothing to address my concerns including about the lack of information I was receiving. My issue was a blocked gore tex graft in my carotid artery (that will identify me but I do not care).
After a number of days of telling multiple doctors I had the graft I was refused an MRI on my brain because the MRI operators had not been told about the graft. I believe my requests for sleeping medication were ignored. In those nights I slept once. How is that care? My requests to be briefed on the outcome of multiple tests carried out on me were met with seeming passive aggressive resentment. It was a dreadful experience. But as I said, this was not the nurses.
