"My parent"

About: Sutherland Hospital / General Medical Unit

(as a relative),

My parent has been in hospital recently with cellulitis and I believe many nurses have treated them abhorrently. I understand they refuse to let my parent wash their hands when they go to the toilet; I believe they complain about helping to get them out of bed; at one point my parent moved their arm and the IV stopped working and they apologised to the nurse that came to fix it, at which the nurse said, I understand, you'd better be sorry; my parent needed their sheets changed and we called for a nurse, one brought sheets and said somebody else would come by later, only nobody showed up until 6 hours after I had left.

The nurses seem to intentionally cause pain to my parent, and pretend they don't know why they are crying out in pain. This is, in my opinion, unacceptably cruel treatment of a person with a serious infection and a great deal of pain, I worry their apparent negligence is going to cause my parent further harm.

Dear coordinationyb54,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know of your parent’s admission to the General Medical Unit at Sutherland Hospital.

I would like to sincerely apologise for the distress caused to you and your parent during this admission. I am very disappointed as the standard of care you describe, is not in keeping with normal standards from staff at this hospital.

Our aim is to provide a high standard of care to all our patients and should you wish to provide your details, your parent’s admission can be thoroughly reviewed. If so, please contact Ms Valmai Ciccarello, Consumer Feedback Manager, on SESLHD-TSH-Consumerfeedback@health.nsw.gov.au or by phoning (02) 9540 8523.

Thank you,

Vicki Weeden

General Manager
