"my experience as a patient in the hospital"

About: Sale Hospital / Medical Service/Ward

(as a service user),

I was admitted after a suicide attempt and I was in a very vulnerable state and the care I received from the doctor and one nurse made the whole experience the most horrific week of my life.

I have severe back pain and I felt the doctor who was supposed to be looking after me was pompous and arrogant.  They decided in their wisdom that my usual pain medication was not needed and gave me endone three times a day which barely touched the pain and i didn't get medication to help with my mental state.  My anxiety was off the charts.  I just had to deal with it.

most of the nurses were lovely but there was one in ccu who I felt hated me and was so rude to me and didn't give me all of my prescibed medication one night.  I feel people should have the right to change doctors if the doctor they are assigned has no communication skills.  the doctor did not talk to me the whole time I was in hospital.  when I complained of back pain I felt they brushed me off like I was irrelevant.  I paced the corridors and had to try and relieve the pain with heat packs which were pretty much useless.

I must mention a lovely nurse in the general ward who went out of their way to help even though I understand their hands were tied as far as the pain went.   I came out of hospital and my heart took all day to calm down.  I would not wish the experience on my worst enemy.  Most of the nurses I encountered were really nice and did spend a bit of time just to talk to me but the doctor I saw is, in my opinion, a horrendous individual and i never want to see them again.

Dear aquariusyd48,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience regarding the treatment you received at Sale Hospital, noting that this included concerns around the provision of medication for pain and anxiety, some of your interactions with staff, suboptimal communication, and feeling irrelevant when you complained of back pain.

This was clearly a very difficult time for you as regards your physical and mental health, and we apologise that your experience of our services did not meet your needs and expectations. It is pleasing to note that there were some positive aspects to your stay, such as most of the nurses being lovely - taking time just to talk with you - and the nurse in the general ward who went out of their way to help you.

If you would feel comfortable discussing your concerns in more detail, I would welcome you to contact me on (03) 5143 8319 or at mark.dykgraaf@cghs.com.au. This would enable us to complete a more comprehensive review of your experience, and identify areas where we can improve our service to the community.

Kind Regards,

Mark Dykgraaf

CEO
