"RACE team for elderly patients in ER"

About: Joondalup Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

Early this week our family was instructed by Siler Chain nursing care to call for an ambulance for our Mother. The ambulance went to Joondalup Health Campus. It seemed the waiting times upon our arrival were very lengthy. As my Mother is very elderly we were worried as I recall the corridors behind the emergency dept were already full with people being triaged. We had only been there a matter of minutes when we were approached by a member of the RACE team, a (I believe) new service that was formed to keep people over the age of 65 out of the ER waiting rooms, rapid assessment, with the hope of treatment and care plan and hopefully being able to return them home with supports in place. I would like to congratulate Joondalup Health Campus for putting together a service for our vulnerable elderly that I feel is staffed by such caring, professional and compassionate staff.  My mother was taken for a CT scan quickly, assessed and cared for very thoroughly, we could not have asked for more.  I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to the whole RACE team and hope that the service is extended in the future.

Dear Boo98,

Thank you for your positive feedback. This has been shared with the Rapid Access Clinic for the Elderly (RACE) and Emergency Department teams, as well as more broadly at the hospital Team Leaders meeting. The RACE clinic has been established to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and time spent in the Emergency Department for older patients who require acute assessment and Geriatrician input. The clinic has been in place since February and has just proudly assisted their 500th patient. The RACE clinic is supported by a multidisciplinary team which includes physiotherapist, occupational therapist, social worker, geriatrician and senior nursing staff.

I hope you and your family are keeping well.

Regards

Dr Kevin Hartley
