"Pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding"

About: Albany Health Campus / Maternity Ward Telehealth Service - WACHS South West

(as a service user),

Our baby was born early October at Albany Hospital at 40 + 1. after a 2 day labour (1 day at home) then an epidural, rupture of membranes and synthetic oxytocin we decided to proceed with an unplanned caesarean due to our baby's position. we ended up staying 5 days in Hospital after birth to allow time to recover physically.

I would like to share the following feedback

1. Positive Birth Program provided via telehealth (hosted by Tiff) was absolutely integral to how my husband, myself and our baby managed labour. this course gave us the skills to face each development as they happened on the best possible frame of mind. this course is fantastic and would be great to have face to face in Albany.

2. Midwife support provided by Albany maternity unit was fantastic and we felt very well cared for.

3. unfortunately I had badly damaged nipples during breastfeeding on the first days and unfortunately the options for support for breastfeeding in Albany is very limited (one private LC  with long wait list). I feel it would be good to have Lactation Services in the hospital or as an outpatient service, similar to what is provided in other hospitals regionally.

Dear elephantjb35

Congratulations on the birth of your baby and we are so glad to hear that you all felt supported by our wonderful midwife team. We have shared your story with them and the Hospital’s leadership team.

The Positive Birth Program has helped many of our families in the Great Southern prepare for birth and has been delivered by telehealth for the last two years. As of next week we will return to delivering this program face to face as we know that face to face is much more engaging for our expectant families.

We acknowledge that many of our new mums would benefit greatly from a focussed Lactation Clinic or Lactation Clinical Nurse Specialist and we are sorry for the difficulties you encountered. We are currently preparing a report in support of the introduction of this service for the Albany Health Campus and new mums in the region.

I hope that you and your family are enjoying your new family member. Please do not hesitate to contact the Maternity team if you need further support or advice.

With best wishes

Tash Jeppesen

Congratulations on the birth of your baby, elephantjb35!

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about the Positive Birth Program via Telehealth. We feel so lucky to be able to bring this program to you both in your living room and also as of next week in-person in Albany. I will be sure to pass on your thanks to Tiff - an incredible member of our team with an absolute passion for everything pregnancy, labour and birth.

I was saddened to hear about your struggles postnatally with feeding and nipple trauma. Please reach out if this is an ongoing problem and I can refer you to our Telehealth Lactation Consultant Service. I was please to read Tash's response regarding the Lactation Consultant Service development in the Great Southern. A much needed service in many areas around Country WA. Your feedback will be a great motivator for change.

Please email me Kasey.Biggar@Health.wa.gov.au if you would like me to put in a urgent referral for you.

Warmest Regards,

Kasey Biggar
