"Not taken seriously"

About: Broome Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

I felt the Doctor that was on shift when we presented. Didn't take me seriously about my consearns for my toddler I Brought them in as they had gastro but looked more sick and wasnt holding any fluids down. I brout my toddler back a couple of days later and they were admited in. My toddler was Dehydrated and I recall the Doctor from our initial visit didnt take any samples of blood or stools, they discharged us & sent us home. with electralytes and some other stuff but to the best of my knowledge the doctor did not give the right care needed.

Dear crocodileqb65,

My name is David Woodward and I am the Senior Medical Officer for Broome Hospital.

I was sorry to read of your experience with your toddler’s illness eventuating in an admission.

It must have been very worrying and tiring.

I hope things are improving/have settled completely by now.

It is difficult to comment on specific cases via this forum as it is anonymous.

Sometimes it is entirely reasonable to not pursue further investigation and discharge a patient home with a plan to return if things do not go as expected.

However, I believe these decisions should be shared between parents/carers and health professionals in a way that ensures everyone is comfortable with the decision and parents/carers know exactly when to return for review and are able to return for review.

It would appear that in this instance, we were found wanting.

I would be very happy to investigate this case further and provide feedback to the practitioner.

You can contact me on 0419 196947 or via david.woodward@health.wa.gov.au should you wish.

Thanks again for your feedback, feedback like yours help us to improve our service.

Regards

Dave Woodward
