"Gout"

About: Swan Hill District Health Medical Centre

(as a relative),

My parent went to the doctor with concerns of swelling mainly in their finger and slightly on the rest of their hands. The doctor said they didn’t know what the swelling was. The doctor then preceded to cut into it, turns out the swelling was gout which my father has a history of. My parent was admitted to the hospital Acute ward due to an inflammatory response their body had to this procedure. Why would the doctor cut into anything if they seemingly weren't sure what it was. I believe my parent still has limited movement in their hands because of this. It has effected their entire life.

Dear alphayy39,

Thank you for taking the time to write about your parents experience. This sounds very disappointing for you and your parent and extremely frustrating that they required an Acute admission to manage the inflammation, that appears to have been caused by the treatment. It also sounds like it has been very much impacting on their ability to do their usual everyday things which is really not what would have been intended when the treatment pathway was chosen initially.

I would be really keen to fully investigate this situation further to establish why the treatment was to incise the swelling and what the Doctors rationale was for this at the time. Could you please email me directly on ckeogh@shdh.org.au, or phone me on 50339250 so I could get more fully the picture of what occurred for your parent, and I can look into the matter.

Again, I would like to thank you for taking the time to write about your parents story, we would really like to ensure that others don't have anything similar to this experience and ensure that we make changes in our care for the future for people with gout. To do this fully I look forward to hearing from you and working with you on improving the processes around this type of condition.

Kind Regards,

Chloe
