My son had a tongue and lip tie released as newborn. With pending surgery for him and minimal weight gain we were referred to Grace the speech therapist at Katanning Hospital. After assessment Grace noticed he struggled with his swallowing and sucking when feeding. She was concerned he was aspirating milk. She referred us to a metropolitan hospital and made specific recommendations to keep him safe during feeds. Further we found out he had a dairy intolerance and had to move from breast feeding to bottle feeding with specialised formula. We struggled to get him onto a bottle so Grace came and helped us almost daily for a few weeks with his feeding, ensuring he was using the correct bottles for his condition.
Not only was this a stressful time for us as we were under going assessment with the metropolitan hospital team for his diagnosis for craniosynostosis but we were also concerned our baby was not safe during feeds, along with other complications. We couldn’t be more grateful to have such an attentive, caring and hard working therapist working in a rural community. Without her we would have struggled to get him to where he is now, strong enough for his pending surgery.
