"Medication post discharge"

About: Lyell McEwin Hospital

(as the patient),

Lyell McEwin Hospital, having been admitted with heart racing into emergency dept. was transferred to V ward sometime the next morning. I was discharged that same day in the afternoon. during that time, I did not have a saline drip inserted, and was not offered a cup of water, tea or coffee, nor any breakfast, or lunch, I had to ask for a cup of tea and a sandwich which I felt was given grudgingly. By the time I had been discharged, I was in there just under 24 hours.

I was discharged with medications, which were to be faxed to my chemist, (as this medication was not available at the hospital pharmacy)

Contacting my pharmacy on the following day, only to be told that only one script had been received by them, which they dispensed, I rang the hospital to find out what had happened to the other 2 scripts, (tying up the pharmacy phone 40 plus minutes)

Conversation as I recall it:

Hello, my name is.....etc.. I was in emergency........etc...

Nurse, oh yes I have those scripts here,

Me: can you please fax them thru as I am at the pharmacy at the moment

Nurse, No I don't have the authority to do that.

Me: can you please find someone who has the authority.

Nurse. one moment -  10 minutes later

Nurse No sorry the doctor can't authorize that, I'll put you back to the switch!

ME. can I speak to the prescriber of the medication according to the script

Nurse: I'll put you back to the switch!

Cardiology Dept Nurse: Hello etc........ No sorry we don't have a doctor by that name .

Me: This doctor was the one whose name is on the script.

Cardiology Dept Nurse: Well sorry,

Me: explained story again,

Cardiology Dept Nurse: Hang on I'll put you on hold while I try to sort this out.

20mins later.

Cardiology Dept Nurse: I'll  transfer you to the Emergency Dept Co-ordinator.

Emergency Dept Co-ordinator:  Hello (story explained yet again,) (another 10min wait) oh ok I will fax them thru to your pharmacy later on today.

Me: thanks so much.

The following  morning.

Me: Good morning, have you received the scripts from the Lyell McEwin Hospital ?

Pharmacist:  No ............

Me: Physically at Lyell McEwan Hospital on that morning, on volunteer dept reception phone (near car park station)

Emergency Co-ordinator: Oh yes, I have them here.  If you can walk around to emergency, dept. I will give them to you.

Me : in emergency dept waiting area,  30 minutes.

Emergency Dept nurse,  I'm so sorry about this.......................................

Really, this is disgraceful.

V Ward:     While lying in the bed, I recall someone required assistance, and pushed the assist button, the green light went on, a nurse, walked out from my room, towards the green light and continued on, I believe not even acknowledging the request for assistance. just walked straight past, and to add insult to injury I had to pay $3.00 for the car park.................to pick up medication that I believe should have been given to me on discharge.....
