"My shoulder"

About: Fremantle Hospital and Health Service / Orthopaedic Surgery Department & B7N

(as the patient),

I had to wait 5 years on the elective surgeries list with no real idea of what was wrong. In the middle of the year I had some calls preparing me for surgery, no plan was gone through I had no idea what they intended to do or what had been confirmed wrong?

Once surgery was done I felt I was treated so badly by the nurses I discharged myself. I believe politely but assertively.

I had to come back early as my gp stated one of the knots in the stitches wouldn’t dissolve and had become infected. The surgeon didn’t even look at me let alone my arm and I was sent home despite a number of concerns not answered. When we came back the second time I felt as though I had frozen shoulder but saw a fill in dr. They were concerned and went to get the surgeon. They came back 15 mins later alone and tried a couple of tests with their hands and said I was fine.

I went for scans as didn’t believe the dr and found had a number of issues including frozen shoulder but have been told the scans are incorrect and I’m not receiving any answers or follow up and my arm is getting worse and has not been improved by surgery actually quite the opposite so I feel something is wrong, the physio says my bicep looks incorrect and my movement shouldn’t be restricted the way it is and they can’t proceed with physio without answers

Please speak to the clinician in orthopaedics!

Dear sagittariusjh78,

Thanks for your Care Opinion post. You touch on quite a few different issues that are of concern to me.

I am sorry that you had to wait 5 years for surgery, and I am also sorry that you felt that you did not know what was wrong with you or the intended outcome of surgery. This is not the level of communication we aim for with our patients.

I would like to speak to the Orthopaedics team as you have requested, but will be unable to do so without more information from you. It sounds as though there are a lot of learnings we can take away from your experience, so I would like to ask that you please contact the Patient and Family Liaison Service at Fremantle Hospital (9431 2787 or FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au) with your details so that we can properly look into your case and care.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty.
