"No test results or communication"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Eye Diseases and Surgery (Ophthalmology)

(as the patient),

In 2017 I lost some vision in one of my eyes.

Since then I have been going to Royal Perth Hospital to try and find out why I have lost this vision. I have had roughly 2 appointments per year since.

I have an issue with how my case has been handled, in particular recently.

I presented through emergency to RPH due to further loss of vision in my other eye in October 2022.

After seeing a doctor they found that an electrophysiology test request was faxed to a clinic at Sir Charles Gairdner after one of my previous appointments nearly a year earlier but the test had never been done.

The Dr called the clinic at Charlies and found that the faxed test request was lost and it would have to be resubmitted.

The Dr emailed through the test request while I was in the room (great) and said it would be another month or two until the test is administered.

In November I had my electrophysiology test at Charlies.

Two days later I had another appointment at Royal Perth Ophthalmology. Upon seeing the Dr on this day they said they had not received the test results yet and that they would do a "chart out" in 3 weeks and contact me.

3 weeks after my appointment I called the Ophthalmology clinic as I had not heard anything, no answer but I left a message on their answering machine asking for them to call me back.

I did not hear from anyone so I submitted a complaint to the RPBG.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au email. Someone from the RPH consumer engagement called me back the next day saying they had passed my details to the clinic and they would call me back "in the next few days".

Over the next 10 days I emailed the RPBG.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au email 4 times trying to get any information about what is happening.

I still have not heard from the Ophthalmology clinic since my last appointment in November.

How can a person know if their test requests have been lost or if they are on a wait list for an appointment slot? Is there no oversight or checking on this?

I am losing sleep stressing, not knowing if I am going to keep losing my vision, not knowing what is wrong, not even knowing if I have another appointment.

Dear emmc,

I appreciate you sharing your experience of treatment at RPH. I am very sorry to hear of the poor communication and service you describe and can assure you this is not the level of service expected of staff. I understand how concerning it would be awaiting your results and further consultation. I regret this did not occur initially and you were required to follow up.

I understand staff have been in contact with you and I am pleased they were able to assist you. Again, I apologise for the frustration and worry this has caused you.

Thank you again, for the opportunity to review the care provided to you. Feedback such as yours enables us to identify areas for improvement and ensures we can address issues impacting the delivery of services provided to our patients and the community.

I wish you all the best with your health.

Kind Regards,

Dori Lombardi
