"Wound clinic"

About: Bundaberg Hospital

(as a carer),

I care for a friend, indigenous (with an intellectual disability) on a disabled pension, in the first instance they refused to see my friend citing an event that occurred 6 years prior for a completely different wound.

After contacting Hospital Governance & the Qld Health Ombudsman, they agreed to treat them… this is supposedly a “public” hospital.

After some treatment which has improved my friend's situation, they once again are discharging them from their care in spite of the fact their leg is still not 100%.

It seems to me the excuse is 'we don't have the resources to treat chronic conditions'. I fear my friend will ultimately lose their leg due to inadequate care.

In my opinion, what an abysmal situation when a public hospital won’t treat them. I feel it’s no wonder indigenous people have such poor medical outcomes here in Qld.

I fear for my friend and had previously had some success dealing with Hospital governance but here we are, a few months later & here we go again. My friend literally has no-one to whom they can turn, I negotiated the my aged care to finally get them a level 4 package so they have some financial support to be able to get some nursing from Bolton Clarke, their care provider. Twice a week. As you can see, I believe the leg requires much more attention than that.

In my opinion, the whole system is to blame, in the first place being as my friend was refused NDIS. I tried for a response to no avail. I feel my friend is definitely one who fell through the cracks.

This response was published by Care Opinion on behalf of Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service:

Dear ariesdf48,

Thank you for sharing the experience you had while supporting your friend to receive care from Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS).

We are committed to providing care, connection and compassion to all, and value the opportunities and partnerships that can be built with members of our community. WBHHS encourages people to share their experiences with us so that we can expand areas of our service that work well and can look at ways to improve areas that may be strengthened.

However, without the explicit consent of the patient, it would be unethical of us to discuss specific details of care, even in response to a carer story.

Speaking more broadly, WBHHS provides comprehensive wound care services to people requiring support and treatment to manage their complex health conditions, and we carefully plan the care provided to suit the individual needs of each patient.

Should any patient or community member have any feedback, concerns or complaints about care received and would like these resolved, we encourage them to contact our Clinical Governance Support Unit on 4184 1824 or WBHHS-CGSU@health.qld.gov.au.

Kind regards,

Ben Ross-Edwards

Chief Operating Officer

Update posted by ariesdf48 (a carer)

Have spoken to clinical governance to have the poor attn fixed previously. I feel this ongoing saga with nurses I dealt with telling specialist Drs that they will not treat a chronic condition is absurd.

We have also contacted our local member, signed a specific consent form, so he can indeed access the records & I am making enquiries with a media organisation with a view to publicising the entire issue.
