"Excessive category one elective surgery waitimes"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Cardiothoracic Surgery & Transplantation & Ward 4C

(as the patient),

I have been listed as a Category One for a cardiothoracic procedure since late last year - I  believe this was meant to be done within 30days and I still do not have a date for my surgery despite completing all my pre-ops requirements just under 3 months later.

Dear statusft85,

Thank you for reaching out to us via Care Opinion, and I sincerely apologise for the excessive wait times you are experiencing. I understand that it is frustrating and scary having to wait for a procedure, and adds stress to your life at a time you least want additional stress.

Our cardiothoracics service is experiencing increased demand at the moment, particularly with emergency cases which reduces the availability of theatre time for elective cases, such as yours.

I would like to reassure you that patients on waitlists are reviewed regularly for clinical indication. Should your condition worsen we will be aware of it and reassess your urgency in line with the presenting emergency cases.

In addition, I’d like to reassure you that we are increasing the theatre access for cardiothoracic surgery in the coming months to address cases on our waitlist that have been waiting longer than recommended times.

If you would like to discuss your case in more specific detail please contact our Patient and Family Liaison Team on 6152 4013 or FSH.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au.

I wish you the very best for your upcoming surgery – I assure you our surgeons are marvellous and you are in safe hands.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty.

Hi Neil,

I appreciate your reply and understand the complexity of cardiothoracic presentations.

I have contacted the hospital as you mention and followed their processes accordingly on at least 3 occasions.

Of particular disappointment though is being given a multitude of different responses ranging from your surgery is imminent, right through to it won't be until a few months' time.

What I would also like to highlight though, is whilst I wait, I have had 4 ED presentations and a number of other procedures postponed or cancelled on the basis of this surgery happening with relatively short notice.

Acknowledging case load numbers - I very much query the process adopted at Fiona Stanley Hosptial given the vastly different marker points such as median and 90th percentile wait times across all metro hospitals.

Kind regards
