"Care for my child in visible pain"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I presented to the Kalgoorlie ED as my child had severe constipation, screaming in pain while straining, wasn’t feeding properly and was vomiting after the small feeds they would have. The first doctor we saw was amazing, they gave me a list of things to try in between feeds to keep my child hydrated, but as it was change over we were being handed over to another doctor.

I felt the new doctor was extremely rude from the minute they walked in the paeds bay and after their examination of my child, told me they weren’t willing to do anything to help even given the list of symptoms my child was experiencing as listed above. I suggested an enema, recall I was laughed at and was told the doctor was reluctant to give my child one in fears it would ‘throw off their electrolytes’. The doctor suggested Panadol and keeping my child’s fluids up, I asked what Panadol would do and recall I was told ‘it may or may not help with the pain’. The doctor also asked if I would like the paediatricians to come look over my child but I declined as I wasn’t going to sit in that bay and feel neglected for another 2 hours before the paeds arrived, and I expressed that every time I come to ED with my child, I feel I receive no help, to which I believe the doctor said that sometimes it’s better to do nothing. At that point I removed the monitor from my child’s foot and exited the ED and went home with my poor screaming child.

Dear Bigfumes20,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story. It is distressing to hear that you did not feel supported to be involved or understand the care plan being followed for your unwell child, I sincerely apologise for this. In the first instance I would like to assure you that if your child continues to be unwell or deteriorates in their health further please represent to the Emergency Department (ED).

I would also like to let you know about the Aishwarya’s CARE Call program. We encourage our consumers to raise their concerns with the clinician who is caring for them or their loved one. If you feel you are not being listened to, or the care pathway is not being explained fully to you, please make an Aishwarya’s CARE Call by calling 9080 5781 or using the fixed phone in the ED waiting room. This will ensure you are put through to a senior member of staff who will listen to your concerns and help you or your loved one with accessing the care needed.

Because of the anonymous nature of posts on Care Opinion I am not able to comment further on your family’s case or identify the medical officers involved for individual follow up. However, I would like to assure you that we are always seeking to improve the patient and family-centred approach that our health professionals provide in delivering care. If you would like this matter reviewed in depth please contact our Director of Medical Services at the Kalgoorlie Health Campus, Dr Kaushik Banerjea on 9080 5802 or via email Kaushik.Banerjea@health.wa.gov.au.

I hope you child is now feeling better.

Kind regards
