Recently, my elderly parent was taken by ambulance to Bunbury Regional Hospital ED after they had fallen at home.
Not once did they offer my parent a drink or something to eat (they are Diabetic), when I arrived later that day I went and got them something to eat and drink.
My parent was in a lot of pain due to a very swollen leg and foot and no pain relief had been offered. I had to keep asking what are you doing for my parent, comment was we are waiting for blood results, these were taken 4 hours previous. I asked will they be admitted or moved to short stay, they said moved to short stay then onto a ward. I said that my parent has private health insurance and I wanted them to go next door to a private hospital. They said that they had to wait for the medical team to assess them, my parent had been there for about 10 hours.
I went home and phoned the next morning to ask what was happening with my parent and they said they had been moved to medical ward in Bunbury reqional hospital. I went in to see them and to my disgust my parent had been put in a 4 bed room with 3 patients of the opposite sex, totally unacceptable in my opinion, the patient opposite my parent was laying spread eagle on their bed showing their bits, disgusting, it seemed their reasoning was that my parent needed to be in a high visual room because of falls, I thought what a load of rubbish, every other time my parent has been admitted because of a fall they have not been placed in a "so called" high visual room, I felt it was not a high visual room. After complaining about their treatment my parent was moved to another room with patients who were the same sex. It was up to me to shower my parent and take them to the toilet. I had to ask many times when was my parent going to have their pain relief and antibiotic intravenous.
I know the nurses are under the pump and the majority of them are wonderful, but for goodness sake I feel its not right that the visitor has to see to the patients needs.
I find it very offensive that staff in the ED talk in their native language.
I had asked many times for my parent to be moved next door to a private hospital but I got no reply.
regards
