"Hospital care for children and unclean room"

About: Karratha Health Campus / General Ward

(as a parent/guardian),

I believe a nurse who was caring for our young child was rough and impersonal with them. I felt they treated my child like a patient and not like a human being or a child. Time came to give our child oral painkillers and I recall the nurse insisted on waking them up, turning the lights on and slapping them on the back yelling wake up, wake up! I stepped in and told the nurse to stop and gave our child the medicine instead. I believe this hospital was supposed to replace the need for private admission patients because the care was supposed to be the best. It was a public holiday and I got the impression most nurses didn't want to be there!

Myself and my child were moved rooms at 2am into a room that it seemed hadn't been cleaned. It smelt like stale urine. The following day I got conjunctivitis and a glue ear which I put down to the cleanliness of the room. I asked the nurses for saline for my eyes which they obliged, I believe they knew the room wasn't clean but didn't action anything. I also moved the furniture for the one nurse that night. I complained about moving rooms to a day nurse and I felt they curtly told me there were only two nurses on the nightshift and they're doing their best. I responded that I had moved furniture for them so where do I put my timesheet in? Absolute joke, in my opinion.

Dear greenrc49,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with this feedback for your child’s admission to the Karratha Health Campus.

I am very concerned about the experience you described about the Nurse’s interaction with your child and I would like to investigate this further in conjunction with the Regional Director of Nursing. Could I please ask that you contact me so I can obtain the patient details to commence this? Please phone me on (08) 9144 7369 or alternatively by email Liam.Avery@health.wa.gov.au

I am sorry about moving rooms especially in the late hours which can occur to prioritise unwell patients however these should be minimised as best possible. With your details we will also be able to review this experience and ensure with our support teams that we maintain cleanliness within our clinical facility.

Thank you for providing the information you have given us, it is through your feedback and the feedback of others both positive and by way of complaint that we are able to improve the services available to the people of the region.

Kind regards,

Liam Avery, Operations Manager WACHS West Pilbara
