"D&C delay"

About: St George Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

Came to the emergency department for d&c after knowing baby has no heart beat due to early pregnancy loss. After 4-6 hours of waiting and seeing doctors they let me know they can't do d&c that day, because other important emergency cases. Told us to go home & come next day at early pregnancy unit.

Next day went there in the morning and after all the waiting and seeing doctors, got a bed about 5 hours later and we been told D&c will happen soon. About 2 hours later doctor came and told they couldn't do it because other important emergency. And doctors tried to send us home and told to come next day. We requested a lot but they couldn't do it, so my partner insisted that to stay at the hospital for the night, so she can have the d&c next morning.

At night near midnight she started getting serious cramps in abdomen and blood clots started to come out. At the time of writing this, she was still in pain, suffering at her bed, still no assurance to do the d&c early in morning, they just keep giving her pain medication after pain medication.

If they done the d&c on time, I believe she would not have to deal with the pain and depression she is going through now. I feel there is no humanity from the hospital regarding her mental side, she lost her baby and now we trying to get it out but it seems the hospital is not capable of doing that. I don't know how my partner can cope with this depression.

Dear courageyz74,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding your recent presentation to St George Hospital.

I appreciate that this is a very difficult time for you and your wife and I am sorry to hear of your distress and loss of your pregnancy.

As a Major Trauma Centre, our Emergency Department (ED) can be exceptionally busy at times - the wait time you experienced is regrettable and can occur when the ED is experiencing a large volume of patients. Unfortunately, this can impact on our patient’s experience.

Emergency lists and wait times are impacted by major trauma cases such as road traumas and occasionally our predicted wait times are affected by unforeseeable circumstances. We endeavour to keep patients and their families updated on any delays to the timing of procedures.

I apologise if our communication on this occasion was not of an acceptable standard. Our staff always strive to act with empathy and compassion while serving the broader community. I sincerely apologise for any distress this experience has caused you and your wife.

I am advised that the Patient Experience Manager has sent you her contact details and looks forward to discussing this matter with you.

Take care and I wish you and your wife all the very best. Please reach out to the Patient Experience Manager if you need any further support.

Ange Karooz

General Manager
