"Emergency triage"

About: Peel Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

Brought my parent in as they had diarrhea and vomiting and was collapsing. In my opinion, the triage nurse had no people skills what so ever. We explained the symptoms and I recall they said that’s what gastro is. I then told them that we think it is from a new medication my parent has started, I told them the name and I believe the nurse just shrugged their shoulders like they didn’t know what it was and then said it wouldn’t be from that.

About 30min later I went back to let them know my parent felt like they were going to collapse again, the nurse was busy talking to the security guard so I had to say excuse me. The nurse said just let us know, I said so what do you want me to do when my parent falls on the floor and I recall the nurse said just come back and tell me because we have no beds. I was trying to tell the nurse but I felt they had no interest what so ever.

10 mins later another nurse came out to check my parent’s blood pressure while they were laying on the floor and that is where they left them. I told the nurse about the new medication and they said yes it does make you feel unwell and that they would go and get an anti nausea tablet. 50 mins later my parent had not been given the tablet and has not been checked on again even though I told the nurse my parent keeps feeling like they are going to faint. I felt it was terrible terrible service! We were on holidays and I felt I have been better off driving elsewhere where we could actually get some help!

Dear bravomc37

Thank you for taking the time to share your story on Care Opinion. I was very sorry to read of your recent experience at Peel Health Campus and sincerely apologise for the communication of our triage nurses and that your parent was not provided with timely medication to assist with the nausea they were experiencing.

I want to assure you I take your concerns very seriously and would like the opportunity to investigate your experience thoroughly.

I strongly encourage you to reach out to Tracey Taylor at (08) 9531 8580 or email TaylorTracey@ramsayhealth.com.au to enable this to occur so we can better understand the circumstances of your parent’s experience.

We hope to hear from you soon and thank you again for sharing your story so that we can continually improve the care and service we provide.

Matthew Wright

Chief Executive Officer
