"IV therapy discharge"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / General Surgery Department & Ward 7A & Ward 7B

(as a friend),

From a visitor of view, I felt my friend was treated very badly by one of the nursing staff who I believe was so nasty on ward 7B. My friend who had cancer, been through a lot of tough procedures and complications. They were unable to tolerate feed, lost significant of weight, admitted 7B due to dehydrated, and query kidney function failed. Of course, they are unable to drive, and no other one can pick them up in her family.

On the day of discharge, doctor told my friend that they can be discharged after IV therapy but can stay another night if the iv-therapy finished too late. When my friend anticipated the iv therapy would not be able to finish until late. My friend called bell and asked nicely if they could stay that night due to transport issues. The nurse’s immediately action is shouted at them that: go home now before the time is too late! Without any explanation I believe the nurse ceased my friend’s iv therapy straight away and pushed iv medication very quickly despite my friend begged them to push slowly due to painful on pushing, I felt the nurse was cold-hearted and did not listen at all. I recall they then removed my friend’s IVB straight way with blood everywhere on bed. They gave my friend a taxi voucher and told my friend take their luggage to leave immediately, my friend was shocked and panic, I believe the staff initially would not get an orderly for my friend as well.

My friend called me and cried, I was worried about my friend, and rushed to hospital, then I saw my friend already walked out from lift with a walking stick limbed and run after the cold nurse who pushed the luggage trolly rushed to entrance.

I called my friend’s name and they both stopped, I told the nurse that I was worried about my friend, I recall the nurse said everything is fine…blabla, then, even more shockingly, it seemed the nurse asked my friend to return their hospital taxi voucher without asking if I can pick up my friend. Of course, I can drop of my friend to home, but I don’t like the way they treated the patient. In my opinion, this nurse is awfully rude and absolutely no passion on their work at all.

I truly hope this does not happen to someone else anymore.

Dear visior,

Thanks for your Care Opinion post. I am sorry that your friend had a difficult experience on the ward, and that their discharge felt rushed and without explanation.

You touch on quite a few different issues that are of concern to me. I would like to speak to the nursing team involved so I can get a better understanding of what occurred for your friend but will need more information and their consent if they would like you to act on their behalf. It sounds as though there are a lot of learnings we can take away from their experience, so I would ask that you or your friend please contact our Patient and Family Liaison Service on 6152 4013 during business hours or via email FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au so that we can properly look into your friend’s case and care.

Yours sincerely,

Neil Doverty
