"Struggling to receive decent child care"

About: Exmouth Health Service

(as a parent/guardian),

To Whom It May Concern:

My needs were not met recently at the Exmouth Hospital in WA.

My child had an appointment with a GP. They are over one year old and I schedule the appointment for their annual check-up and regularly scheduled needles.

I believe the child health nurse, is away and no one seems to know when their back. When I called to schedule the appointment with a doctor I made sure that the vax my child would need was available and that the doctor seeing them would be able to administer it.

We arrived on time and right around the time my child was supposed to nap might I add (it’s difficult to schedule appointments around an infant’s schedule).

The doctor told me they were not able to give my child their needles because the doctor doesn’t normally do that and I would need to see the child health nurse.

I’m furious. The entire reason I needed to get this done was because we are supposed to travel soon, I wanted this done and should have been able to get this accomplished prior to leaving.

I will now need to schedule something whilst travelling.

I know hospitals are under-resourced and the point of me sending this feedback is to gain more insights on what I feel you all need to make it better. In my opinion, what’s happening isn’t good enough.

Each department we interact with schedules its own appointments and it seems to me no one talks to each other there. I feel no one is ultimately accountable and I believe it’s not working for the people receiving care.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear shuddergz46,

Thank you for reaching out to us on Care Opinion.

I would like to offer my apologies for the confusion when you presented with your child for their check up and needles at Exmouth Hospital. It is clear we have not provided the comprehensive service our community should expect of us.

I will discuss this matter with the clinicians at the GP Clinic and ensure there is understanding of the immunisations that can be administered when the Community Health Nurse is on leave.

I would like to speak with you so I can assist with the scheduling of a new appointment, either in Exmouth, or I will be happy to liaise with a health service on your travel itinerary to assist with obtaining a convenient appointment for your schedule. My name is Kumar Deep, Operations Manager – Gascoyne and can be contacted on 08 9941 0300 or email Kumar.Deep@health.wa.gov.au

Kind Regards

Kumar Deep
