"Behaviour of a nurse"

About: Wonthaggi Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I am writing to express my disappointment and would like to lodge a complaint regarding the experience I encountered with the nurse on the pm shift (don't know their name) who I felt was very rude, loud and quite aggressive at Wonthaggi Emergency Department.

I was admitted to Wonthaggi ED as I had severe pain while urinating. My regular GP was aware of my problem as my blood tests showed I had an infection (prostitis) and she was awaiting further test results and on her advice I went to the Wonthaggi Emergency Department for treatment. Having had no sleep for 2 consecutive nights I was quite desperate for relief.

While the doctor at ED was assessing my condition I was given endone for the pain. I was also given an antibiotic drip to help the infection I had. Some blood and urine samples were taken at the hospital to help determine my condition. During my time there the treatment plans kept changing and I was being told bits of information. I was then transferred to another section of ED as they were waiting for my tests results and action plan.

This nurse later came into the room after the doctor had assessed me and asked my reason for being there. They said that my details were still not entered into the system and they needed to know what my problem was. After explaining my situation the nurse left the room. Their work station was outside my room and as their voice was loud I could hear them discussing my condition with another nurse stating that my condition was more than likely to be a stone in the kidney with what seemed to me absolutely no thought that others could also hear what they were saying.

At about 8:00 pm the doctor came to my room and said they were thinking of giving me a tablet that would help to shrink my prostate. I agreed as I would try anything at that time. They said the only side effect would be that it would cause a drop in my blood pressure. Just a few months ago I had a quadruple bypass as well as surgery for testicular cancer. I called my partner to let them know what the doctor had suggested.

My partner and I were worried about my pain and the drop in my blood pressure if I was sent home so I discussed the situation with the ED doctor and requested a night stay as it was now about 9:00pm. This nurse quite aggressively, in my opinion, told me that the hospital was not an Air B&B. At that point I was still in pain & would have preferred being under medical supervision. I believe the nurse then went and complained to the head nurse who came in and gave me the choice of either calling a cab or asking my partner to pick me up. My partner then came and picked me up. I was discharged after 10pm. I went home still in pain and had to wait until morning to get to the pharmacy to buy my antibiotic and pain killers.

My main complaint is what I felt to be the aggressive, unprofessional & disrespectful behaviour of this nurse. It seemed the whole hospital knew my situation as I recall they spoke loudly and quite aggressively.

In the same manner that medical staff deserve respect so do patients. We live in a diverse society therefore everyone deserves respect and not to be humiliated.

I would appreciate a response to my complaint.

Dear cricketee33,

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback about your experience in our Emergency Department. You have clearly had some very serious health issues over the past few months and I am sorry to hear that you have been ill once more, particularly for an infection that sounded very painful. Managing pain is certainly more difficult when sleep deprivation is factored in.

We expect our patients to be treated with courtesy, professionalism and respect and I offer my deepest apologies that you felt disrespected and humiliated. I would like to review the circumstances surrounding your experience and speak to the staff involved. I would be grateful if you could call or text me your name and DOB so that I can properly investigate. My number is 04366 32 078.

I hope the prescribed medication did not result in a problematic drop in blood pressure and that the infection has since resolved.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards, Chris
