"Paediatric emergency care"

About: Sutherland Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My child was bought to the hospital by ambulance late at night. They were X-rayed at around an hour later but then it took until around 4 hours to see a Dr. The staff were lovely and caring - they gave us a room to wait that enabled us to sleep - but I believe there was only one Dr covering the entire ward which seemed very inadequate. This isn’t only stressful and upsetting for patients and families but I feel creates another layer of stress for staff already dealing with high a high anxiety and complex workplace.

Last time I bought my child the emergency we waiting 4hrs and then left out of frustration. I would have done the same last night except they required an operation to address the reason they came in. There were other people waiting with us in the waiting room who, as I understand it, had been kept waiting 5hrs.  Crazy in my opinion.

Dear lyraqx34,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding your child’s presentation to the Sutherland Hospital Emergency Department recently. The standard roster to cover our Emergency Department at night is four medical officers, although it is possible that this number may have been affected by staff absences on the night your child presented.

Emergency Departments can be very busy especially at night when other options for medical treatment are not available. In NSW Emergency Departments, patients are triaged and seen according to the clinical urgency of their condition. During busy times, people with less urgent conditions may have longer wait times. This may be due to large numbers of seriously unwell patients being prioritised for emergency care. I apologise for the distress caused by the long wait you experienced on that evening and would like to assure you that the doctors make every effort to see patients as soon as possible.

I hope your child has recovered well from their surgery.

Best wishes

Vicki Weeden

General Manager
