"I felt threatened in recovery"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Surgical Ward

(as the patient),

After waking up from a routine procedure recently at Bunbury regional hospital day procedure unit. I requested my usual medication as I had been fasting for quite some time. I recall my response from the nurse was we are too busy. I felt I was reasonable in my opinion as I stated, I get you are busy but I need my medication, for the nurse in question’s response was to call for security and, I recall, tell them to get me out of their face, then for the nurse to turn to security and myself and say I just want to punch them (the patient) on the face. (Their exact words, I recall). Mind you this is no longer than 5 minutes of waking up from anaesthetic.

I then proceeded to grab my stuff as all I wanted to do was go home as I felt completely unsafe in the care of the hospital system at that stage. After waiting at the front for my partner to collect me I had the security involved come to me and severely apologise for the nurse's actions. I recall the security guard then proceeded to state that in no way was I ever aggressive neither in the wrong for requesting my regular charted medications, with a response that the system has failed me. I am still really traumatised from the whole experience and have lost all faith in the health system as I have been constantly let down. I would also like to note that I felt the security mentioned were amazing in the whole situation.

Dear ararz44

Our sincerest apologies that you felt threatened in Recovery, following your procedure with us here at Bunbury Regional Hospital. We care deeply about the people we care for. We want everyone to feel safe within our facility, especially those who are vulnerable, such as following a procedure.

I would like for you to make contact with us so we can follow up your individual experience. This would enable us to ensure that we learn from this and develop processes to ensure that this does not reoccur. My name is Karen Horsley, and I am the Bunbury Hospital Service Codirector for Surgical services. You can contact me on 97221421 or email on Karen.horsley@health.wa.gov.au. Alternatively, you may want to make direct contact with Aaron Agnew who is the A/theatre Manager on 97221224.

Dear ararz44

Thank you for reaching out and discussing your experience with our theatre team. Whilst we were unable to verify your concerns with either the nursing or the security teams, I have taken your concerns very seriously. I would like to apologise for not feeling safe in our recovery room after your procedure.

We have spoken to the staff on duty that day and ensured that they reflect on their behaviours and review our code of conduct. We have also conducted sessions with staff on professional behaviour, particularly with vulnerable patients such as those recovering from anaesthesia.

We are continuing to monitor staff working in recovery to ensure no patient is made to feel threatened in any way.

Thank you again for reaching out so we can improve the care that patients receive in our hospital.

Kind Regards

Karen Horsley
