"Postnatal care - mixed feeling"

About: Royal Hospital for Women / Maternity Services Division

(as the patient),

I stayed at the postnatal care unit for 3days at Royal hospital for women after an emergency cesarean. The care I received was some what mixed.

The first midwife I met on the ward, Claire, was a young, passionate and professional midwife who taught me and my partner with patience and enthusiasm. We want to thank her for her kindness and dedication during our stay.

The experience was counter balanced with another midwife offering unhelpful remarks. For example, our baby had a nappy leak in the middle of the night during breast feeding on the bed. I asked if they could help change my bedsheets as it was soiled (would have done it myself but the wound pain was bad) and was told, do I not know how to put on a nappy and that I better learn quickly how to do it or else I’ll be spending the rest of our lives doing laundry. I felt vulnerable at the time and didn’t stand up for myself to say anything. Yes I know how to put on a nappy. Looking back, I feel it would have been a lot better if they showed more compassion and less criticism.

Dear horologiumeq30

Congratulations on the birth of your baby and thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. We appreciate the kind words you have shared about what worked well for you and we will share these words with our midwifery team. We apologise that not all of your postnatal care was positive and apologise for the miscommunication that occurred. We understand that having a baby is a very special time and that our words are extremely important and impact the experience of families. We apologise that some of our communication felt that it lacked compassion and kindness. I am sorry this happened and will share your experience with our team in order to help us improve and respond to women and families through supportive conversations provided with empathy.

Kindest regards

Robyn Gasparotto

Midwifery Co-Director, Maternity Services
