"Broome Hospital theatres"

About: Broome Health Campus / Medical Imaging Broome Health Campus / Theatre

(as the patient),

I was a patient at Broome hospital for an elective abdominal surgery and also used the radiology services the day before.

Radiology staff were friendly, polite and professional, they told me about how long things would take, so I was able to align my expectations.

The pre anaesthetics staff and imaging to theatre staff, I was kept fully informed the whole way through. You go in the day before and meet with the Surgeon and anaesthetic Doctor and also the nursing staff for final checks, i was then taken through the risks. I believe they took my feelings of fear seriously (as I had significant previous bad experience) and they were just amazing in their communication and care. During pre op the consent I signed was gone over and I was asked if I had any questions which I appreciated.

During my surgery it was found that the risk of potential harm to me was higher than anticipated. My Surgeon then consulted with another 2 surgeons from the speciality and general surgery and the decision was made to abort the surgery.

Once in recovery I was informed as to what had occurred, and again my Surgeon came to inform me just prior to discharge in case I had forgotten.
At all times during this I believe I was treated with dignity and care, and despite being a tiny bit upset I couldn't have my surgery as planned, I am very grateful that my safety was prioritised.

Dear doradokp84,

Thank you for your feedback on what sounds like an incredibly stressful and difficult time.

Safety and patient care is always paramount and these decisions can be difficult for the team to make.

Wishing you a safe and rapid path to recovery.

David Forster

A/SMO, Broome Hospital.
