"Exceptional service at every step in the process"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department Busselton Health Campus / Emergency Department Fiona Stanley Hospital

(as the patient),

First day of holiday, just checked-in to our accommodation but unfortunately slipped down a small flight of stairs, resulting in a compound fracture of my left heel.

With blood seeping from my foot and in excessive pain, the receptionist heard the noise and quickly came on the seen, firstly fetching my husband from our room, once ascertained which room, then called 000 for an ambulance. Staff from the hotel also attended in a supporting role. The ambulance from Dunsborough, staffed by volunteers arrived, 45 minutes after a short delay mustering volunteer support,

Ambos cut though my sock and shoe to remove them so they could initially bandage the wound, so very professional and caring throughout. They also gave me pain relief which was much appreciated.

They then took me to Busselton Health Campus’ Emergency Department, where once again quick, professional and caring support was provided. The doctor decided I needed x-rays and then also a CT scan completed, From there the decision was made to transfer me to Bunbury Regional Hospital - Emergency Department - where surgery was completed around midnight to  address the bleeding and manipulate the heel bone fracture together for hopeful self healing. Again the professional and caring attitude by all staff I came into contact with helped to re-assure me that I was being looked after by a team of dedicated and caring medical personnel.    I was then  assigned to the surgical ward at Bunbury Regional Hospital  and again all staff worked to ensure I felt comfortable and informed about what had happened to me and the next steps toward recovery.  As I live in Perth this required co-ordination between the Country Health system and their metropolitan colleagues.

The discharge and OT network worked tirelessly to organize the equipment and follow-up appointments required, with some aides being made available from Bunbury and then further from Fiona Stanley and Fremantle Hospitals. Again I can not but praise the professional and caring support that has been provided. If I could name everyone I would.

Whilst my journey to recovery has only just began, I remain confident of a successful outcome because of the care provided thus far.

Dear Caringstory,

That sounds like a horrible holiday! However I was very buoyed to read of the compassionate care and treatment you received from so many different elements of the Department of Health, plus St John Ambulance. Thank you for taking the time to share your gratitude.

Your story is a wonderful example of how our staff deliver compassionate care across health services to a level they would wish for themselves or their loved ones. We are currently receiving nominations for the annual South Metropolitan Health Service Compassionate Care Awards, where we acknowledge those staff and teams who help us to provide a great patient experience. If you’d like to nominate a staff member or team involved in your care, you can use this link: https://pipsmhs.health.wa.gov.au

I wish you the best in your ongoing recovery, and hopefully you will get to have another chance at your holiday in the not too distant future.

Kind regards,

Neil.

Dear Caringstory,

What an unfortunate way to commence your holiday. I do hope that you are well on your way to recovery and in time can return to enjoy a stay in the Southwest.

Thank you for your kind words. Our Region makes every effort to provide professional, caring joined- up care of our patients within the Hospital, the Region and in liaison with the Metropolitan hospitals. This is undertaken with the patients’ needs at the centre of what we do. In this instance, it appears to have worked seamlessly. We will pass on your message of thanks to our teams at Bunbury and Busselton and with our partners at St John Ambulance.

Many thanks again for your lovely message

Karen Horsley

Service Co Director Bunbury Hospital
