"Emergency involving my son"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department Royal Perth Hospital / State Major Trauma Unit Ward 3G

(as a parent/guardian),

My son crashed on his mountain bike while cycling. Luckily he was with a friend who recognised that he was seriously injured and took him straight to the Bunbury emergency department. He was a young adult and 300km away from his family. The staff in the Bunbury ED reassured him and cared for him. His doctor phoned me at 11.30pm to update me on his progress because she knew how worried we were. He was diagnosed with a grade three splenic rupture and flown to the Major Trauma Unit at RPH. Thank you Bunbury ED team for taking care of my son when I couldn't be there.

My son was transferred from the Bunbury hospital. Dr Marcelle and the amazing team of highly skilled nursing in the trauma unit took the best care of him that I could wish for. Even though the unit was crazy busy, I still felt that they made my son a priority and communicated clearly to us what was happening during this scary time. I can not thank them enough and I think the nursing team should be acknowledged for their skill and compassion within the metro health system. Thank you.

Dear xrayyz58,

What a scary experience for you and your son. I was so pleased to read that the team at Bunbury Emergency Department took great care of your son and kept you informed of his progress before he was transferred to RPH. It will be my pleasure to pass on your kind words of thanks to all the team involved.

I do hope your son is recovering well and can soon get back to riding his bike.

Kind regards,

Dear xrayyz58

Thank you for taking the time to share the story of your son’s recent admission to the State Major Trauma Unit (SMTU) at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH). It was pleasing to read that Emergency Department staff at Bunbury Hospital provided the care and assurance you needed during his seamless transfer to RPH.

Given the nature of your son’s accident, and that you are 300km away from him is especially stressful for you and your family. I wholeheartedly agree that the medical and nursing team in the SMTU are amazing and I am extremely proud to work alongside this group of highly trained, dedicated and compassionate people.

I will take great delight in sharing your words of appreciation with those involved in your son’s care.

I wish your son all the best in his recovery.

Kind regards

Dr Lesley Bennett
