"Bartholin cysts"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Emergency Department King Edward Memorial Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

Almost a year ago I went in to King Edward emergency presenting what looked like a bartholin cyst only to be sent home being told that it wasn’t. Go back two weeks later for the same thing to be told it is and that I’ll be having surgery to remove it. Wake up from surgery to be told on the recovery ward while I was still half asleep that they didn’t remove the cyst, only explored. They also did not mention they left two pieces of gauze inside of me, which fell out almost three full days later. Any longer in there and I believe my body would have begun turning septic. Present back two weeks later again only to be told it was only an inflamed hair follicle. No medication given, nothing.

Fast forward three months, still there. Fast forward even further to the present day where I’m now under a private gyno to have the entire gland removed because low and behold it was a bartholin cyst the entire time and I now have complications from it! In my opinion, such an appalling excuse of a hospital, considering they’re meant to be a women’s health hospital and I feel they have a blatant disregard when someone actually says something is wrong.

Dear coordinationyw84

I am so very sorry to read your story. The experiences you have described do not align with the WNHS values of care and respect, and I would like to offer my deep apologies that you’ve been left feeling so dismissed and unheard.

It is very clear from your post that your experiences with KEMH have been distressing, and we would very much appreciate the opportunity to look in more detail into the concerns you have raised. I would encourage you to contact our Consumer Liaison Service directly on 6458 1444, or email them at wnhscls@health.wa.gov.au. They will respond promptly and will make the arrangements to have your case reviewed in detail.

Once again, I am so sorry to hear about your experiences at KEMH and I hope to hear from you directly so that we can review and address the issues you have raised.

Kind regards

Diane Barr
