"Recovering from drug addiction"

About: Lives Lived Well – Wollongong (Day Program)

(as a service user),

When I first started looking for support with my ice addiction I was doing it because I felt like I had to. Outside pressures and stressors, and doing it for my kids seemed like a big enough motivator. But truthfully it wasn’t. I kept using and kept hiding my drug use, just doing what needed to be done at a bare minimum effort. Since engaging with the watershed program I realised the importance of being honest with myself and those who support me. I found the value in sobriety. Very quickly I found I no longer wanted to use because I didn’t want to lie to my group at the weekly check in. I felt supported, cared for and never judged. The program gave me a safe space to recover, people to share my successes with, and support when things felt tough. I learned a lot about myself and about others through the discussion topics and I now know that recovery is a journey and that I am far from finished yet. I appreciate and highly value my experience here, and plan to use the skills I have learnt to uplift my future. My story is only just beginning, but I am determined to have a success story and thanks to Lives Lived Well I believe that is definitely possible.

Hi vulpeculaee67, You are so right, recovery really is a journey. Its very rarely a linear straight line experience. Often there are ups and downs, but when we frame these as learning experiences and not fails - then we do exactly that - learn from them. I love your post, and thank you so much for sharing so bravely and honestly. I agree wholeheartedly, once you wrap your head around the importance of honesty not just with others, but with yourself, that's where the tremendous growth truly starts.

Your story is at the beginning, but you have a wonderful first chapter. Your reflection here is very powerful. Keep this mindset active and deploy the new learnings on a daily basis. Reach out to our Lives Lived Well team if you need it, that's what we are here for.

Thank you for sharing! Amazing work and so well done!!

:)

-Craig
