"Emergency Department"

About: Rockingham General Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Recently, I had a fall, I had bruised my arm & took a large piece of meat off my knee cap, after a few hours of pain & throbbing I decided to go to the emergency department in Rockingham hospital, the triage nurse was great, they gave me medication, then I went to see the registration window, after that I waited & waited & waited, after 4 hours I went to a triage nurse & was told that I had 1 more patient in front of me 1 more patient was called & in half an hour 2 more were called, I then went to see another nurse who was on the floor and I told them I was leaving, they apologised to me for waiting so long but I had to go, I had not eaten all day, I was nauseated and I could not walk, told them I would treat myself.

I think it is absolutely appalling that a person has to wait that long, my partner is a diabetic also in a bad way and they were finding it hard to sit there, I honestly believe that because I had asked how much longer I had to wait I was deliberately put back, other people came in the hospital after us, went into see a doctor then was gone home, I am elderly and I think if that is the way that older people are treated it is very disappointing and disrespectful, by the time I left I would have been there 5 hours or more, also there was another patient about my age who I believe would have been there 6 hours or more whom I felt very sorry for, I think there needs to be a proper system put in place, I know one thing I won’t be back in the emergency department ever, this is the first time I have ever had a problem with this hospital

Dear runningcq76,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story regarding your recent experience in the Rockingham General Hospital Emergency Department (ED). I am very sorry to hear that you waited a long time in the waiting room, the ED follows the Australasian Emergency Triage Guidelines which determine when and where patients will be seen in an ED. While all patients in an ED may be experiencing serious illness or injury, those with life-threatening and severe conditions must be treated first, this means that people who arrive after you may be called first.

This department is often very busy and sometimes a serious emergency that requires additional support from Doctors and Nurses can affect times for people to be seen. Thank you for waiting so patiently and I am sorry to hear that you left without being seen. If you would like us to further investigate the details of your presentation, please contact our Consumer Liaison Officers on 9599 4323.

Kind regards

Kath Smith
