"Nurse's conduct when treating severe burn."

About: Collie Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

The caravan myself and my child was asleep in caught fire and I received severe burns to my hand trying to carry my child out. I presented to Collie Emergency Department for treatment where I was triaged and taken in as an outpatient. I can safely say that the pain caused by the burn is by far, the worst pain I have experienced in my lifetime but the treatment I received by a nurse made the ordeal much more traumatic.

I found the conduct of the nurse to be extremely rude and quite cruel. On several occasions I recall I was yelled at and told to shut up! As there are sick people being seen to, and the treatment of the burn I felt was rough and aggressive. More than once I had to beg for more pain relief as I was still in horrendous pain, this seemed to further annoy the treating nurse who then abruptly discharged me while I still was in extreme amounts of pain, impaired by pain relief and traumatised by the treatment given. I am expected to attend follow up appointments to properly care for my wound as per another hospital’s instructions but I am too frightened to attend those appointments on the off chance I may have the same treating nurse. I live rurally and the next nearest hospital is at least a 45min drive. Transport is a struggle. I am unsure of what to do to make sure my wound gets cared for properly?

Dear julietrm56,

I am very sorry to hear of your story and the high level of pain you experienced on your presentation to the Emergency Department at Collie. I am also very concerned to hear of your negative experience with a Nurse.

I would very much appreciate being able to follow this up with you and investigate the outcome of your care and if possible I would appreciate you calling me 0429 323 174.

Please accept my apology that your experience has been so painful, and the negative response received from the Nurse who cared for you.

Chris Cox

Dear julietrm56,

I am reaching out again as I don't seem to have heard from you. I would like to assure you that I have shared this feedback generally with the team as a timely reminder of the importance of treating our patients with kindness and compassion.

I would, however, still very much appreciate being able to follow this up with you and investigate the outcome of your care and if possible, I would appreciate you calling me 0429 323 174.

Otherwise, I hope that you are continuing to recover well.

Chris Cox
