The caravan myself and my child was asleep in caught fire and I received severe burns to my hand trying to carry my child out. I presented to Collie Emergency Department for treatment where I was triaged and taken in as an outpatient. I can safely say that the pain caused by the burn is by far, the worst pain I have experienced in my lifetime but the treatment I received by a nurse made the ordeal much more traumatic.
I found the conduct of the nurse to be extremely rude and quite cruel. On several occasions I recall I was yelled at and told to shut up! As there are sick people being seen to, and the treatment of the burn I felt was rough and aggressive. More than once I had to beg for more pain relief as I was still in horrendous pain, this seemed to further annoy the treating nurse who then abruptly discharged me while I still was in extreme amounts of pain, impaired by pain relief and traumatised by the treatment given. I am expected to attend follow up appointments to properly care for my wound as per another hospital’s instructions but I am too frightened to attend those appointments on the off chance I may have the same treating nurse. I live rurally and the next nearest hospital is at least a 45min drive. Transport is a struggle. I am unsure of what to do to make sure my wound gets cared for properly?
