Eyes are a bit weird - we all know that. Important and special, but strange and fragile - and so any injury or change is worrying and often more painful than it has any right to be. So it was not the best part of my holiday when I woke with sudden eye pain in the middle of the night in Kalbarri. At this stage maybe a normal person would seek medical help, but I wanted to see if it would just get better. It didn't, so at 10 am on a bright (ouch) morning I nervously went to the Kalbarri Health Centre - not really knowing what to expect.
I need not have been nervous. I experienced exceptional care from the first moment. The nurses on duty were friendly and efficient and kept me fully informed as they liaised with both the ETS and the Ophthalmologist on call at SGH. I spoke to the NP from ETS by telecon - a straightforward process. The health centre was clean, tidy, and well-run. I want to again compliment the nurses who coordinated all of the care, made sure I was comfortable, and involved me in decision making. They are the heroes here.
After discharge I thought that was to be the end of things. Unfortunately there were a couple of issues in sending the script from Perth, then a change required. Not a big deal but we were up against a (perfectly reasonable) deadline: the pharmacy was closing soon. Again the whole team - led by the nurses and admin staff at Kalbarri - deftly resolved these administrative hurdles - going well beyond what I had hoped.
Post-discharge instructions were clear, and I was set up with an appointment back in Perth where again I was seen quickly and efficiently, and was reassured that everything had healed.
While this was not the eye-deal break in our holiday, the situation was improved immeasurably by the care from Kalbarri Health Centre, ETS, and Ophthalmology at Sir Charles Gairdner. Thank you all so much. I believe you should all get pay rises :)
"Not the weekend eye planned, but great coordinated care in Kalbarri"
