"Waiting 13 days for trauma surgery on fractured tibia plateau with no surgery confirmed yet"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Orthopaedic Surgical & Trauma & Spinal Care Ward 3H/5G

(as the patient),

Broke me Tibia Plateau, type 6 recently.

Taken by ambulance to a hospital, was told RPH could only do the surgery as they had the the equipment and specialists, they didn’t have any surgery beds to accept me so was put into ED Transit. Was there for 2 nights and then admitted into a ward at the same hospital, was discharged to RPH a few days later and put into ASU 4 bedroom with 3 patients of the opposite sex. Did not feel comfortable or safe. The following evening transferred to orthopedic ward where I was still waiting for treatment.

At the time of writing this, currently fasting for the 6th time and with no guarantee that i wont be bumped off the list again!

What are you suppose to do, I feel ive been patient and understanding but after 13 days and no guarantees of an outcome, hence my post.

Why is this happening when I believe the government says there’s nothing wrong with our health system.

Am I being unreasonable?

Dear puppised47,

It was deeply upsetting to read your story on Care Opinion detailing your wait for surgery at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH), and I would like to acknowledge the frustration and distress you are currently experiencing.

There has been an increased demand through the Emergency Department which has impacted on the increasing volume of emergency cases requiring access to RPH Theatres. Regrettably, this affects the wait time for many of our Orthopaedic trauma patients who are waiting for non-urgent surgery. I would like to assure you that this is not an ideal situation for the Royal Perth Bentley Group, who are always striving to improve the way we deliver care to our patients and the community.

While I appreciate that you are a current inpatient and receiving appropriate monitoring of your healthcare needs by the medical and nursing teams, I would like to ensure that you have been placed on the appropriate lists waiting for trauma surgery. It is difficult to comment further without your particular details; however, I would urge you to discuss these concerns further with the Consumer Engagement Unit on (08) 9224 1637, 8am to 4pm or email RPBG.feedback@health.wa.gov.au so that they may liaise with the team looking after you.

We are committed to providing the highest quality of health care we can offer for our patients, and I would like to sincerely apologise that in this instance you are not experiencing this.

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion. I wish you all the best for your surgery and recovery.

Kind regards

Dr Lesley Bennett
