I knew I wanted midwife led care for my pregnancy and birth so I was really happy when I was placed in the MGP4/5 program at KEMH.
As someone who suffers from anxiety, having that continuity of care from a known midwife was really beneficial to me throughout my pregnancy. It meant I had someone to call if I was ever concerned or had any questions and I knew who I’d be seeing at each appointment, which made me feel much more comfortable.
Already having built a relationship with my midwife, Mel, during my pregnancy also meant I felt confident when I went into labour and, most importantly, I felt I could really trust her and the team. I didn’t feel I had to second guess any suggestions that were made as she had taken the time to go over my birth plan with me and I knew she was on my side and doing what was best for me and my baby. The labour was exhausting, painful and I had many crisis of confidence throughout but I honestly don’t think I would have made it through without the support I received from Mel and the other midwives.
Being introduced to other midwives at MGP4/5 in case Mel wasn’t available on the day I went into labour also made me feel at ease as they were all really lovely so I knew I’d be in good hands. Mel also put me in touch with a student midwife, Robyn, who was wonderful and a great addition to my support team.
Throughout my journey with MGP4/5 I felt like I was always given necessary information but never pressured to do something I didn’t feel comfortable with, it was my pregnancy and they were they to support me whatever I decided to do. I would absolutely recommend that anyone having a baby at KEMH be part of the midwife led programs.
