"Prepping for my birth"

About: Broome Health Campus / Maternity/Midwifery

(as the patient),

I am due to have my baby any day now.

The way I feel I have been treated when I am in my most vulnerable state, prepping for my birth is appalling.

I believe the obstetric team have made it clear they have no faith in my ability to birth my child vaginally. How can they possibly know that? I feel very belittled. It seems to me they are trying to instill fear into a pregnant woman, when I feel they should be supporting me. I feel bullied and, in my opinion, this is called obstetric violence. I am also writing a formal complaint.

Dear The sad patient,

Without knowing the circumstances that have led to your disappointment in the maternity team’s care concerns around birthing your baby vaginally, I am nevertheless sorry that you are feeling so sad and angry as you imminently prepare to have your baby. Some care decisions are not easy and I would hope that well informed decisions can be arrived at together, with the safe delivery of your baby being at the heart of the process. It is never OK if a patient has felt belittled or bullied.

The Broome Health Campus maternity team have a reputation for collaborating with patients to build a safe birth experience for mums and their babies, that is informed by best practice guidelines.

Given that you have indicated that you are due to have your baby any day now, I would strongly advise exploring your concerns further with Dr. David Woodward as the Broome Health Campus Senior Medical Officer, or alternatively, Millie Stewart as the Director of Nursing and Midwifery. We want to support you to be involved in shared decision making that provides the safest choices for your baby's birth.

David or Millie can be contacted on 08 – 91942222.

Kind regards

Dr Sue Phillips
