"Hand surgery"

About: Perth Children's Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My toddler cut his hand at daycare and needed treatment. It was a long wait to be admitted to the hospital ward from ED (6+ hours) but staff were very kind. Unfortunately his surgery was bumped from the following day to the day after that after fasting for 12 hours.

This was tricky with a hangry toddler but the play space on level four is fantastic and really took his mind off things!

We received fantastic care from nurses, anesthetist and surgeon.

Dear leatherkg37,

Thank you for your positive feedback about the surgical and nursing team who cared for your family, while your child had hand surgery.

We understand how challenging it is for parents and “hangry toddlers” to manage the distress associated with fasting and we’re pleased that Fun on Four was a great distraction for your child.

The Theatre Coordinators constantly work with surgeons, and if the emergency operating list is extensive, less complex cases are scheduled for the following day, to minimise fasting distress and allow young children to rest at home. The surgical team tries to communicate regularly with families and keep them updated on the status of emergency lists. Additionally, the Nursing Coordinator assesses whether your child can have clear fluids whenever possible until we can complete the emergency surgery. Despite our best efforts on certain occasions, the volume and complexity of emergency surgery, which is unpredictable, can be considerable and lead to delays. Over the past year, PCH has increased its emergency operating time on weekends so that we are able to reduce extended wait times where possible.

Once again, we appreciate that you have taken the time to share your positive feedback and we hope that your child is recovering well.

Kind Regards,

C Dunbar
