"Homeless upon discharge"

About: SCGH Mental Health Observation Area (MHOA)

(as the patient),

Nursing staff were excellent during stay however I felt the doctor and welfare staff straight out lied to me that accomodation had been secured for me for the next 7 days.  I believe it's a terrible thing to tell someone when not to have it, leaves them on the streets and mentally deteriating by the hour.  I feel it's very cruel.

Dear PatientHomeless,

Thanks for providing your feedback on your experience with the SCGH Mental Health Observation Area. We are sorry to hear the service did not meet your expectations in providing you with accommodation upon discharge, and acknowledge this has been distressing for you. Routinely, the team in MHOA do make all efforts to assist patients with access to accommodation, including liaison with accommodation providers and advocacy for patients in this regard. Whilst the team ensure all efforts are made to secure accommodation and provide patients with information regarding their options, we acknowledge that the service has limited control over how accommodation providers prioritise patient access and there is currently significant demand for crisis accommodation.

If you would like to discuss your specific situation with us further, please contact the Head of Clinical Service on 6383 1000.

Thankyou

Dr Mark McAndrew

Update posted by PatientHomeless (the patient)

I understand that but I feel to falsely tell someone accomodation is confirmed is not right.

By comparison welfare worker from another hospital took all of 10 mins to secure accomodation for next 5 nights.

We agree that this is not right and we will try to look into what may have happened in these circumstances.

Without specific details, it is difficult for us to investigate so please do contact us on 6159 6358 so that we can work to ensure this does not happen.
