"Mirena insertion"

About: Swan Hill District Health Medical Centre

(as the patient),

I had an appointment booked through the gynaecology department, with a doctor who was not my usual one. The doctor was asking me questions that had previously been documented in the history, I felt it was obvious no one had taken a look at it but I thought that was ok. There were other people in the room (doctors I assume), it wasn’t explained to me why they were there. I was taken through an examination checklist for Mirena Cylinder? (small one) and explained the risks about perforation. Was advised these people will be present, I didn’t mind everyone has to learn.

The Mirena was implanted and I experienced instant immense pain – to the point where I was passing out, I felt no one was listening to me, the other doctors seemed to not know what to do.

A nurse came over from ED and I recall said “you’re having a panic attack, you’ll be fine”. There was no oxygen in the clinic so this needed to be sourced from another room. I was given oxygen and had my obs taken. I was asked if I wanted the Mirena removed, I said if it was safe. The nurse that I was speaking to said I’d suffered cervical nerve shock. The nurse contacted my partner. The pain eased once it was removed, the nurse had to prompt the doctor for a script for pain relief as I was still in pain, and then I went home.

The nurse checked up on me the next day and offered follow up and advised that I had experienced cervical nerve shock.

Hi Bilnr36,

I would like to thank you for taking the time to write about your experience.

I am terribly sorry that you had this painful experience in our gynaecology clinic. I hope that you are well now.

I will follow up with the clinic team and discuss the importance of introducing all in the room and their roles while seeking your agreeance for students to be present.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss anything further LGilbert@SHDH.org.au

Regards

Leonie Gilbert

Dear Bilnr36,

Thank you for writing to us about your recent experience within the gynecology clinic. At the outset, I am really sorry for your experience and it seems to me, it has fallen short in a few aspects including clear clinician to patient communication and complication management.

Could you please reach out to me directly on rprabhu@shdh.org.au such that I can investigate the care and ensure feedback to the team.

Cordially Yours,

Rex
