I had an appointment booked through the gynaecology department, with a doctor who was not my usual one. The doctor was asking me questions that had previously been documented in the history, I felt it was obvious no one had taken a look at it but I thought that was ok. There were other people in the room (doctors I assume), it wasn’t explained to me why they were there. I was taken through an examination checklist for Mirena Cylinder? (small one) and explained the risks about perforation. Was advised these people will be present, I didn’t mind everyone has to learn.
The Mirena was implanted and I experienced instant immense pain – to the point where I was passing out, I felt no one was listening to me, the other doctors seemed to not know what to do.
A nurse came over from ED and I recall said “you’re having a panic attack, you’ll be fine”. There was no oxygen in the clinic so this needed to be sourced from another room. I was given oxygen and had my obs taken. I was asked if I wanted the Mirena removed, I said if it was safe. The nurse that I was speaking to said I’d suffered cervical nerve shock. The nurse contacted my partner. The pain eased once it was removed, the nurse had to prompt the doctor for a script for pain relief as I was still in pain, and then I went home.
The nurse checked up on me the next day and offered follow up and advised that I had experienced cervical nerve shock.
