"The Aboriginal Midwife Program"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Aboriginal Midwifery Group Practice (Aboriginal MGP)

(as the patient),

I recently had my last doctors check up to see how baby was doing and if he was ready to come. My midwife Mel had checked my cervix to feel if it was soft or not. They told me to come back the next day to be induced. Later on that day my contractions started @10pm I waited them out for as long as I could until they started getting closer together. Around 12 in the morning I made the call to go in because it was too painful to bare.

Called Mel and told her I’m on my way to KEMH and she said she would meet me there. Mel was a huge help and made me feel better and more calm about the situation. Was always reassuring me between my contractions and telling me I was doing a great job, which was really helpful. The next day @6am my Baby decided he wanted to make his entrance. My partner and Mel was very helpful during my birth, I just wish I got to meet Mel earlier in my pregnancy but the program only just begun before bub came. I can’t wait to properly learn about the program with my future kids as having an Aboriginal midwife made me feel a lot more comfortable.

Dear aprilbby02,

Congratulations on the birth of your son, and thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with feedback on your experience with our newly established Aboriginal Midwifery Group Practice (AMGP).

The aim of our new AMGP is to provide culturally appropriate services to our Aboriginal community throughout pregnancy, labour, birth journey and the postnatal period. I am so happy to hear that having an Aboriginal midwife made you feel more comfortable and supported - I will ensure your lovely feedback is provided to Mel and the team.

Thanks again for sharing your story.

Barbara Lourey
