"Surgery and care"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Short Stay Unit

(as the patient),

Two night care Block G Level 1 Short Stay Unit.

Care after kidney stent and drain insertion, and port insertion into chest.

Nursing care was brilliant, doctors were fantastic could not fault them, however having terminal cancer and a low immune system and having just undergone a surgical procedure, I became quite anxious at the level of cleanliness of the ward and my exposure level to possible infection. I was placed in a small ward with 4 other beds, with people coughing and seemingly with infections, I was also exposed to using the same bathroom as these people, with urine and used toilet paper on the toilet and floor, which caused me some distress. But what caused me the most distress was laying on my bed facing a mould covered air vent in my direct direction. After further inspection of the vents in that level and area all are covered in what I believe is black mould.

After alerting the nurse to my distress over the cleanliness of the bathroom, I was offered a different bathroom to use and the bathroom was ordered to be cleaned. I was moved to a larger sleeping area for the second night so I could get some sleep and noticed the air vents in that area were also covered in a black substance. During discharge the nurse asked me discharge questions one being about my time in their care, that's when I mentioned the black vents above the nurse, they thanked me for the comment and sought out the manager to report the issue, but also asked If I could provide written feedback.

I have been in 4 hospitals in the past 10 months, all of them having the erected and disposal dates written on their disposable curtains, but not in the ward at this hospital.

One other point, the hospital has alot of good medical equipment, not sure why the hospital could not spend some money and purchase ear thermometers, never seen an electronic mouth thermometer in any other hospital in Perth.

The Doctors and Nurses gave me the best of care and treatment and I thank them and the hospital for saving my life.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story following your recent hospital stay on the Short Stay Unit (SSU) at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. I was really pleased to read about the fantastic care you received from both the nursing and medical staff, and I will be sure to pass on your thanks and appreciation to the team.

However, I am very concerned about the poor level of cleanliness you observed in the bathroom and surrounding area during your admission.

We understand the importance of ensuring that our cleanliness and hygiene standards are maintained to a high level at the hospital. Our cleaners work tirelessly to provide a clean, safe and presentable facility and I am disappointed that this was not your experience.

I am advised that staff are working closely with the Cleaning and Facilities Management staff to address the concerns you have raised.

I am pleased to hear that you have been in contact with the Consumer Liaison Service who were able to discuss your concerns in more detail and let you know what action the hospital has taken to address the issues raised.
