About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

Was in ED with my toddler child experiencing terrible gastro symptoms. The child went to the toilet and needed a nappy change. I went to both toilets available to ED and there was no changing facility. I asked the clerk who asked a nurse and was told the change facility was in the COVID waiting area. I was told basically my only option was to go into the Covid wing to change my child. Not wanting to put them at risk of further illness I decided I would have to change them on the floor of the ED bathroom. The clerk gave me a blanket to lay down and kept apologising but I really do think this is an oversight on WACHS behalf.

Dear centaurusjj65

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. As you know we had to make some changes because of COVID-19, however you have identified an important area that we can do something about.

As an immediate action, I will make sure that all staff in this area are aware of the location of the closest alternative change facility (near the Allied Health department). Additionally, I will ask the engineering team to review if a change table can be added to any of the other existing toilet facilities.

I am sorry about your recent experience and thank you again for raising this issue so we can make the necessary changes to make our ED waiting areas more parent and baby friendly.
