"Is it that hard to come and talk to me about my journey of care?"

About: St George Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I presented myself to ED in the middle of the night because I was getting some chest tightness and uncontrolled blood pressure.

The acute hall was sensibly busy. I was not shown how to get the nurse’s attention or where the nurses bell was. I was given a chair to sit on for 3hrs and it was quite uncomfortable. I only had one set of vitals done from triage till the end of the wait.

Then I was given a form to sign about admission, which no one is telling me that I am being admitted.

Why the nurses or doctors don’t discuss the findings with me? I thought NSW health collaborates the care with the patient. I don’t even know which nurse is looking after me while I was in the acute hall. I felt left out, I am worried about my health, and no one seemed to have interest to check in with me.

Dear taurusdd33,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding your experience in our Emergency Department (ED).

St George Hospital strives to provide a high level of service and patient care and I was disappointed to hear of your experience, the hospital has strategies to manage with peak periods, particularly when there are unusually high numbers of seriously ill people presenting to ED for treatment.

I acknowledge that you felt uncomfortable, isolated, and not involved in your care. I can appreciate how upsetting this would have been for you, and I regret that on this occasion we did not meet your expectations. I sincerely apologise for any distress this experience has caused.

Your feedback has been provided to the ED Nurse Manager & Head of Department for follow up - it informs and guides improvements to the care we offer to our patients and the community.

I sincerely thank you for raising your concerns about the care provided in the ED and please be assured that we are committed to make changes and will continue to do so, to improve patient and carer experiences.

Warmest Regards,

Ange Karooz

General Manager
