"No Care Given"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I presented to SCGH with Chronic Fatigue/ PEM 'crash' symptoms- nausea/ weakness/ not able to eat/ drink, shaking/ not being able to sleep properly for days. I was triaged promptly and I felt the Nurse who took my bloods was lovely/ funny and reassuring.

Unfortunately when I got to the Fast Track Area, that's when I felt all good stopped. I recall I was told ( by the Doctor)  that because my bloods were fine nothing could be done/ given and I should go home/ wait it out. I was asked about my psychiatric history and told the Doctor ( honestly) that some people with CFS have thought about self harm etc and I wasn't sure if I would or would not self harm in the future due to my tiredness/ distress.

The Doctor phoned the psychiatric team who stated they wouldn't see me but I should see my Psychiatrist in a few days if my symptoms didn't clear. CFS/ ME is a physical condition not a psychiatric condition so I feel physical care, or at least an attempt should have been made to give some level of care, that might have eased the psychiatric stress/ physical stress.

I was advised to return to ED if my mental state worsened but I'm not sure if I would if this were to be the case, I feel no care would be given or I'd be told to go home again. I already left crying and anxious/ exhausted etc, I don't know if I'd want to do that again.

It pains me to write this as SCGH has been brilliant in the past and I've recieved excellent care. I do understand that I visited on a Public Holiday weekend so I believe my case would have been a low priority however I do feel some care should have been given.

I do hope, should I have to visit again that my care would be at the usual very high standard.

Dear Tired1234,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback about your recent visit to the Emergency Department (ED) at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. I am so very sorry to hear that your experience was not a positive one and that you felt no attempt was made to provide you with the medical care or support you required.

I would like to reassure you that irrespective of whether it is a public holiday or not, all patients who present to the ED are prioritised. I am disappointed to hear that your experience left you feeling so distressed and unsure whether you would receive the care you needed if you returned at any time in the future. I can reassure you that our ED team take every bit of feedback very seriously, and they are looking to improve their service especially in Fasttrack.

Without knowing the specific details of your visit to the ED, I am unable to provide further information or advice. I would encourage you to contact the Consumer Liaison Service (phone: 6457 2867 or email CLS@health.wa.gov.au) to provide your personal details, which will allow our staff to investigate and provide a more personalised response for you.

I do hope you are feeling a little better and have been able to access appropriate medical care and support to manage your current symptoms.

Once again, thank you for sharing your experience of our ED service. It is important to us that we consistently try and improve the care we provide, and your feedback assists us with that process.

Warm regards

Jodi Graham

Executive Director, SCGOPHCG
