"Security staff"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus

(as the patient),

I meant to get a colonoscopy but I’ve had a bit of difficulties with staff in the hospital. It’s just I feel the hospital takes me wrong every time I go in. Every time I come in, they get security and I think it's just not right. I don’t like security, I’m Aboriginal and I feel they class us like we’re animals. Every time I come in and they look up at my screen, it seems the security follow me and eyeball me, they even wait outside the door. I feel it’s just unhealthy, it’s not professional from a hospital. I believe the nursing staff and security I dealt with have no respect for aboriginal people.

I wasn’t going to get a colonoscopy but I spoke with a general manager, Peter, he seems like a really nice guy, and we came to an arrangement. I went in recently and the nurse Nikko in surgical ward treated me really nice. He’s a very nice person. I just wanted to thank him.

Dear bluetg45

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us and I am sorry to hear that you have not felt comfortable at times whilst attending Kalgoorlie Health Campus. Providing a service that is safe and culturally inclusive for our consumers and staff is a high priority for the WA Country Health Service.

Please know that if you would like cultural support when accessing care in the future, you can ask for an Aboriginal Liaison Officer (ALO) to be with you during treatment. ALO’s provide support to Aboriginal patients and their families to assist with navigating health services and ensuring culturally appropriate care is provided.

I am glad to hear that you had a positive experience of our Surgical Ward and that your previous experiences have not stopped you from accessing care when needed. Thank you for your acknowledgement of the great care nurse Nikko provides, we will share your compliment with him.

I hope that you are now feeling well.

Kind regards

Peter Tredinnick
