I’m based in Dunsborough but gave birth at Margaret river Hospital through the Margaret River MGP Program.
I was allocated two midwives on alternating shifts for pregnancy and postpartum. I had continuous midwifery led care from 6 weeks prenatal until 4 weeks post partum. The MGP program enabled me to have a positive birth experience because of the relationship formed with my two midwives. We collaborated in order to create my birth plan and i was advocated for by my midwife during birth.
My birth was an incredible experience because of the safe space created through trusting relationships. I was very lucky. Only several weeks after joining the program they closed it to the Margaret river catchment area. I got to stay even though I was in Dunsborough. This meaning that if you were outside that area you could no longer access this program.
I plan on having a second child and am devastated at the thought of not being able to be in the program. I think that it is vital that Busselton hospital starts the MGP program. I have spoken to many mothers in the Busselton catchment area that would love to have this opportunity.
Unfortunately, I believe positive birth experiences for first births are few and far between. I feel this is definitely the case for most mother’s that I know. Continuous led care during pregnancy, birth and post partum has proven positive birth outcomes. I believe if a Busselton MGP was up and running it would positively affect on so many families in the area.
"MGP program in demand"
