"MGP program in demand"

About: Busselton Health Campus / Maternity Unit, Childbirth & Parenting Education

(as a service user),

I’m based in Dunsborough but gave birth at Margaret river Hospital through the Margaret River MGP Program.

I was allocated two midwives on alternating shifts for pregnancy and postpartum. I had continuous midwifery led care from 6 weeks prenatal until 4 weeks post partum. The MGP program enabled me to have a positive birth experience because of the relationship formed with my two midwives. We collaborated in order to create my birth plan and i was advocated for by my midwife during birth.

My birth was an incredible experience because of the safe space created through trusting relationships. I was very lucky. Only several weeks after joining the program they closed it to the Margaret river catchment area. I got to stay even though I was in Dunsborough. This meaning that if you were outside that area you could no longer access this program.

I plan on having a second child and am devastated at the thought of not being able to be in the program. I think that it is vital that Busselton hospital starts the MGP program. I have spoken to many mothers in the Busselton catchment area that would love to have this opportunity.

Unfortunately, I believe positive birth experiences for first births are few and far between. I feel this is definitely the case for most mother’s that I know. Continuous led care during pregnancy, birth and post partum has proven positive birth outcomes. I believe if a Busselton MGP was up and running it would positively affect on so many families in the area.

Hello hekady64,

Thankyou so much some providing us with a Care opinion, and we are thrilled that you had some a wonderful birthing experience through the Margaret River MGP. Your story really describes the benefits the MGP (Midwifery Group Practice) model of care provides with continuity of primary career.

Busselton Health Campus are very keen to commence an MGP for women in our catchment, and we have been carefully planning for this for some years. The maternity services in Busselton have historically been very different than those in Margaret River and we want to ensure the MGP ties in seamlessly as a holistic addition to the maternity services we provide to maximise the experience of the families birthing with us.

I am happy for you to contact me, and in fact I would be very keen to discuss with you, as a consumer, any specific aspects of the MGP you would like to see included as we make these plans to go forward.
